Hartman beautifully narrates the radical social behaviors that helped challenge traditional beliefs of love and marriage: queer relations, single. Thrillingly unnerving and richly evocative, Mason’s nimbly written chiller about a haunted farm slips skilfully between the present day and the s. As the tension escalates so does the deft characterisation and melancholy atmosphere, marking The Wayward Girls out as one of the year’s most exciting tales of the uncanny.
